Negative Online Publicity Can Hurt Businesses

8:53 AM

The popular rhyme, “Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me,” is something that strongly resonates with kids constantly teased by others. The rhyme places importance on staying calm and good-natured despite the taunting. However, while the rhyme rings true in children’s playgrounds and classrooms, in the World Wide Web, name-calling could hurt businesses.

On the Net, a single negative word about a company’s product or service could have a ripple effect. For instance, a customer buys a burger from a new fast food chain. Dissatisfied with the purchase, he or she decides to take a photo of it and post it on Facebook, together with the caption “Tasted like rubber!”

This single post won’t have that much effect…initially. However, once it’s seen and shared by others in their social networking accounts, the business in question will likely see its reputation go down even before it had the chance to fully take off. The plethora of social networking platforms in existence today gives all the more reason for businesses to stay on guard on what’s being said about them.

Unfortunately, watching every Twitter feed and checking every Instagram pic takes a lot of effort. There is a more systematic way to check on any negative publicity, and this is something online reputation management specialists are good at. These professionals help boost business reputation while gradually wiping out all traces of online negative publicity.
